Director Lab Informatics North Hollywood, CA

Directs & manages the development & implementation of products/programs in laboratory informatics for the Southern California region. Develops & directs programs to improve laboratory service in the region using IT products. Responsible for overall planning, development, & implementation of laboratory informatics programs, products, & services.
Essential Functions:
- Provides leadership & strategic direction for laboratory informatics programs for laboratory services & related projects
- Helps identify the clinical data requirements of the Laboratories across the region
- Help coordinate the advancement of information systems to satisfy these data requirements
- Consults w/ & serves as an interface w/ the laboratory staff & appropriate committees for the purpose of insuring coordination in systems planning, development & implementation between the Laboratory System & KP IT (KPIT) as well as other appropriate external organizations
- Conducts assessments of the laboratory informatics environments, synthesizes pertinent information, & identifies implications for planning & development of clinical services, providing periodic structured environmental assessment & recommendations relative to future direction for informatics for the Laboratory System
- In collaboration w/ Administration & the Clinical Laboratory Staff, responsible for identifying the needs of the Information System for laboratory services, quality management, utilization management, clinical resource management, & performance improvement initiatives
- Conducts ongoing technology assessment of laboratory information systems & products, related to identifying & meeting organizational needs & potential external collaborations
- Provides expertise to other departments in the support of the laboratory information systems, products, & services responsive to current & future needs of the organization
- Advises on all issues related to access & interfaces
- Tracks & advises on industry standards for the clinical needs (CLIA, CAP,FDA etc)
- Serves as liaison w/ the staff & departments for the purpose of integrated support of the installed applications for Clinical & Anatomic Pathology & Genetics areas
- Assists in developing product specifications including the application & functionality of software programs, software vendor requests for proposals, recruitment of vendors, & evaluation of vendor's work
- Assists in monitoring vendor's adherence to specifications, quality, & effectiveness of vendor support
- Collaborates w/ the leadership & departments to provide Informatics requirements in the development of new & enhanced services for the laboratories

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:
- BS Degree in Healthcare Informatics or, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Engineering required.
- MS in Healthcare Informatics or, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Engineering preferred.
- Clinical licensure preferred.
- Minimum five (5) years of managerial experience in a patient care setting involving the use of clinical information programs required.
- Experience working with Laboratory Information system vendors a plus.
- Must have prior experience in managing information system budgets.
- Must possess strong program skills in order to develop innovative laboratory informatics programs.
- Must be able to analyze and assess needs in informatics programs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential to provide technical, medical and educational leadership to all staff.
- Must be able to communicate effectively the capabilities and limitations of information technology products.
- In-depth knowledge and experience in computer use in laboratories preferred.


Preferred Qualifications:
- Clinical Licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Medical Technologist) preferred.
- Extensive managerial experience with seven (7) years supervising people in a clinical laboratory or other patient care setting.
- Must possess strongmotivational and organization skills, and a quality of care perspective to develop an innovative laboratory informatics program.
- Must have prior experience in managing budgets.
- Must be able to analyze and assess laboratory information system (LIS)resources and needs, and communicate the capabilities and limitations of the LIS, and the deployment plan.
- Customizing an LIS to meet local laboratory needs, and in adapting local laboratory workflows to take full advantage of LIS functionality.
- Maintaining and upgrading an LIS.
- Data mining and report generation.
- Interfacing with analyzers, middleware, and an electronic medical record.
- Knowledge of Visio, Project, Word, Excel, Access, FileMaker Pro, and PowerPoint programs.
- Knowledge and experience in LIS deployment, and the experience of an LIS replacement.
- Familiarity with various middleware and auto verification.
- Experience working with Laboratory Information system vendors.
